Daniel R. Alcott is Partner and Chair of the Not-for-Profit department at Dorf & Nelson LLP. He has developed one of the foremost advisory practices representing not-for-profit, tax exempt organizations in the New York metropolitan area.

Mr. Alcott has resolved disputes on behalf of a number of charitable and other not-for-profit organizations in connection with IRS and state regulatory compliance matters, investigations and tax matters. He appears regularly for clients in connection with 510/511 petitions to transfer all or substantially all of their assets as well as court supervised dissolution proceedings, which require the preparation of complex documents and direct negotiations with the Office of the New York State Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman.

He is frequently called upon to represent clients with respect to their internal governance practices, contracts, and labor and employment concerns, Mr. Alcott is also a leading expert in the emerging field of social entrepreneurship, advising nonprofits seeking sustainability through business activity, as well as socially responsible businesses in activities including the structuring of charitable giving programs.

Before he turned his attention to the nonprofit world, Mr. Alcott’s corporate career included a term as a law clerk to the Honorable Howard Schwartzberg, United States Bankruptcy Judge for the Southern District of New York. He also held positions as Partner, Of Counsel and Associate at several top New York firms including Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy.
