Westchester Women's Bar Association's Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee Event February 1, 2024
To promote greater representation in the legal profession, the Firm endows the “Beth S. Nelson Memorial Scholarship” at Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University with a preference that it is awarded to a student embarking on a career in law later in life.
The namesake of the scholarship, Beth Nelson, began her career as a first grade teacher in the Bronx public school system. With the support of her family, Beth, then in her 40s, decided to change careers and embarked on a new journey. She attended Pace Law School and graduated with a J.D. in 1983. Beth began her legal career working as an Associate at Hall Dickler LLP. She later hung up her own shingle and opened the Law Offices of Beth S. Nelson in Pleasantville, New York where she was a successful real estate attorney in Westchester County until she retired.
Beth was an inspiration to her family and community but, most importantly, to her children Jonathan B. Nelson and Jennifer Nelson Flynn. “My mom showed me and my sister that it was never too late to accomplish your dream. She is the reason we both attended law school because she always told us that with a law degree you can be and do anything in life”‑ Jon Nelson
We are pleased that the 2021 scholarship was awarded to Venesha White, who was hired as an Associate in the Firm's Litigation Department. Heather Wallace, Ana Florez, Anthony Caramanica and Melissa Beideman have also been recipients of our scholarship.
The Firm is the recipient of the Westchester Women's Bar Association “Family Friendly Award”, an award given in recognition of our commitment to gender equality. Additionally, we are proud to presently be the only law firm in the United States to be Gender Fair® certified. Two members of the Firm, Jon Dorf and Honorable Anthony Scarpino, are the recipients of the Legal Services of the Hudson Valley “Equal Access to Justice” Award.
